Calcium Carbonate Sector Faces Dual Challenges of Oversupply and Upgrade Pressure as Chinese Firms Go Global

2026-04-10

During the 15th Five-Year Plan period, while maintaining a high level of opening up, China intensified its efforts to stimulate consumption, promote the development of high-end manufacturing, and cultivate new productive forces. Under the combined effect of these factors, the calcium carbonate industry will face a series of new opportunities and challenges.

More specifically, what do these new opportunities and challenges mean?

Recently, Wang Wenli, Executive Vice President and Secretary-General of the China Nonmetallic Minerals Industry Association, pointed out that as a leading global producer of calcium carbonate, China's industrial development is characterized by clustering and concentration. However, the industry also faces numerous challenges, including overcapacity, homogeneous competition, falling prices, resource security challenges, and the impact of "mining financing" models in some regions. Currently, the industry is undergoing a difficult transformation from rapid growth to high-quality development. Looking ahead, the industry will prioritize resource security, build specialized innovation clusters, promote collaborative innovation across the supply chain, and adjust the industrial chain to adapt to local conditions.

Demand for calcium carbonate continues to grow, and sustainable development has become a key focus for the industry:

The core of global calcium carbonate market growth is shifting to emerging markets, particularly Southeast Asia and South Asia. Expansion in sectors such as infrastructure, plastics, paper, and automotive electronics will further stimulate demand across these industries. In terms of strategic positioning, the "localized production + regional service" model has become the dominant strategy. Chinese enterprises are actively expanding into international markets through technology exports, production capacity cooperation, and mergers and acquisitions. Furthermore, driven by global "dual carbon" targets and environmental policies in countries like China, the industry is accelerating its green and low-carbon transformation. The circular economy model of producing calcium carbonate using industrial solid waste and flue gas carbon dioxide has gained policy support and market recognition due to its cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits. In addition, tariff preferences brought about by trade agreements such as RCEP have created favorable conditions for the Chinese calcium carbonate industry to integrate more deeply into the global supply chain.

Opportunities and challenges:

Development Opportunities: The rapid development of infrastructure and manufacturing in emerging markets such as Southeast Asia and Africa presents a tremendous opportunity for China to export high-quality, cost-effective calcium carbonate products and related technologies. Furthermore, the growing demand for high-purity, functional calcium carbonate from emerging industries such as lithium-ion battery separators and semiconductors is also creating a high-value-added market. Moreover, in the face of rising overseas trade protectionism, “going global” has become an effective strategy for Chinese enterprises.

Key Challenges: International leaders in ultrafine and specialty calcium carbonate maintain a technological advantage, putting Chinese companies at a disadvantage in high-end products and precision manufacturing. Furthermore, increasingly stringent domestic environmental regulations are leading to rising production costs. The industry also faces severe homogenization, manifested in overcapacity of low- and mid-range products, intense price competition, and declining profit margins. Therefore, the market may face a severe oversupply situation in the coming years.
